Eyes

September 15, 2016

While I tend to photograph landscapes and nature, this particular photo of my middle child inspired me for my first blog post. There tends to be a misconception that all kids with autism don't make direct eye contact. We were told early on by one professional that he was fine, he made eye contact, he was not autistic. But that's the thing with something that has the term "spectrum" in its title, it’s a spectrum of unique qualities - no one individual is the same. Of course I love all the features of my children, especially their beautiful eyes. But when I look in my middle child's eyes I see such strength and wonder as he absorbs the world around him. I see his love for me and his sadness and frustration when he doesn't understand. Somedays it is a struggle for him to comprehend, therefore it can be a struggle for all of us. Eventually though, we find a resolution. I look forward to the day when I can hand him a camera, and he can show me what his eyes see.
